A Merrily Medieval Christmas (p.5)

I blinked as I felt a hand on my shoulder.  Suddenly, I was in my bedroom facing Jane.

“Jane! You’re going to be in huge trouble once you return,” I warned, still feeling my adrenaline flowing through my veins.  I now knew what it was like to be a criminal.

“I know,” Jane’s lips quivered with humor and her eyes danced merrily.  “Did you find what you were looking for?”

“What do you mean?” I asked, searching my memory for what I had gone ‘looking’ for.  “Oh!  Do you mean the meaning of Christmas?  No, not unless it’s to have a parade and almost be butchered by Dukes,” I remarked drily.  Jane smiled and shook her head.

“That isn’t the real reason we celebrate Christmas.  Even you know that,” Jane knelt down and searched under my bed.

“I’m not heathen!” I exclaimed.

“I know,” Jane’s eyes seemed to say otherwise.  “If you’re earnest about learning the meaning of Christmas, I’d suggest you read Luke chapters two.”

“Really?” I asked.  I had always thought the Bible was dull and dry.  Why would we have such a fun time around Christmas for something in that book.

“Yes, the reason Christmas started is in that book there, in those chapters.  The reason has and never will change.  It will always be at the root of Christmas, Anna.”

“Thank you, Jane,” I answered and I really meant it.  Perhaps I didn’t like being called an imposter, but Jane had been nice to me.

“You’re welcome, Anna,” Jane smiled.  “Good bye,” she waved before she turned and stepped through the mirror.

I gasped as a heavy object landed on my stomach and made all the air fly out of me.

“Wake up, sleepy-head, it’s Christmas!” my little brother’s voice sang shrilly.  “Come to the living room!” he ran out of the room yelling.

I sat up and felt the cool leather binding of my Bible in my hand.

I wondered how it got there.  Was Jane just a dream?  I flipped through the book until the book of the Luke.  I started to read.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)  To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.  And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,  Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:4-14)
