My Cooking Adventure

Well, you don’t get a description today.  Okay, maybe you do, but of a different sort.  We all have had colds, and my mom has been in bed for the last five days with a fever.  When Mom’s in bed it means we have to eat leftovers because nobody else cooks–just because I’m the eldest daughter doesn’t mean I know or want to cook.

So, I got tired of eating leftovers and sandwiches.  Well, I didn’t actually eat leftovers or sandwiches.   I kinda don’t eat unless someone puts food in front of me.  (Yes, I’m the problem child–sorta.)  So, today I was feeling so terrible, and I realized it might be from not eating lunch or dinner yesterday (I was snacking, though).  I did eat breakfast, but eggs and toast don’t last very long.

I was asking myself why people eat anyway when I remembered what I tell my family when they always ask me about this dilemma of disliking food and cooking.  I tell them I’ll eat browned hamburger everyday for dinner, with apples and popcorn.

Thankfully, we had some ground beef in the refrigerator.  I picked up the hamburger and walked into the kitchen.  There was a pan sitting on the stove from when my six-year-old sister fried some ham.  I guessed it wouldn’t hurt to reuse it, I mean, ham and ground beef are both meat, right?

Now, the biggest problem at the moment was how much beef I should brown.  I decided to make enough extra to feed two other people.  I plopped roughly two pounds into the pan and turned on the stove.  (I do know how to do that.)

As I looked at the beef, I realized something was missing.  I mean, I’m pretty sure my mom adds some stuff to flavor it.  So, I racked my brain in an attempt to remember what I usually see in there.

Onions!  I usually saw onions.  After searching the frig for already cut onions, I resigned myself to cutting my own.  The only problem is you don’t cut onions like you do apples…and you have to peel the paper away.  Um, I don’t think I did a very good job, because at least two pieces were papery.

After the onions were thrown into the pan, I decided my mom usually put salt in the pan.  I walked to the pantry and opted on coarse salt, since I couldn’t find the usual salt.  Then, I decided on garlic powder (who doesn’t like garlic?) and red pepper flakes.  I don’t really know why I chose red pepper except I knew it would be spicy and that sounded good.

After dashing each of those spices into the pan, I sat back to wait.  To be honest, I was really scared this would taste horrid.  I mean, my only cooking experience was twice baked potatoes with friends.  Sadly, they become thrice baked potatoes.  I have browned beef before, but usually my mom takes over before the spices because I’m doing it wrong or something.

Anyway, I was nervous.  When the beef was finally all brown, I put it on two plates.  That’s when I decided to add cheese.  But, we only had shredded cheddar cheese.  I assumed cheddar would be just as good as anything else, so I liberally sprinkled it on.

It was time for the taste test.  I blew on the spoon before taking a bite…And I was surprised!  It was really good, but different.  It was garlic-y, but spicy with the cheesy taste.  And it tasted like beef, so it was really good.

Okay, so maybe my taste buds are a little messed up.  I’m the person that eats dill pickles like normal people eat chocolate.  (It grosses my dad out 😉 )  But, I found it really good.  I tried to give the extra food to my parents, since they are always telling me to cook.  However, they didn’t really want it.  So I left it on the counter, and my younger siblings ate it later.

Our compost bin! Ha!

So, in conclusion, my cooking adventure wasn’t as bad as I feared.  I was afraid it would be inedible.  Instead, it tasted great and was only slightly charred.  (I left that out on purpose!).

How is your weekend?  Do you cook?  What is your favorite food?

I don’t particularly like to cook. I enjoy baking more.
Are you talking about the twice baked potatoes you made with us for the restaurant?
You really aren’t so bad of a cook as you make yourself out to be, Amie. I’ve seen you make quesadillas, sausage and eggs, pizza, and did you forget all the desserts we baked for our tea party we had?

Baking is different…and I didn’t really bake them. I mixed for you, but I didn’t do it all. I have made pizza, but that’s also baking. When did I make quesadillas? I don’t even know what those are.

But you said before you don’t know how to bake or cook. And those twice baked potatoes were yummy! I remember that all I ate, besides the cheesecake 😉
I think they might have been grilled cheese sandwiches actually. I’m not sure.

But I didn’t bake them, you and your sisters helped. They were yummy…but I like my twice baked potatoes better if they have broccoli in them. Probably. I’ve burned grilled cheese before…but that was only because I hate it.

Hehe, I am also the oldest sister, and I do cook, but I mostly like to bake! I’ve made Mac-n-cheese sauce that was like a ball of string, and yeah it was so terrible I through it away, and well made the boxed kind of Mac-n-cheese. XD

Sounds like you figured it out in the end. 😉 Hope your family is feeling better.
My weekend has been good. I actually like to cook and bake. I just don’t have much time for it at the moment. Work + school = like, no free time. 😉 Not sure about my favorite food. Maybe cheese burgers and french fries?

I don’t know. Maybe he could make it when we go to your house.
I think I remember that. Where the person slept in Emma’s little house and people snuck in and kidnapped them? That was fun!
There was also the time we ate pizza and played Nerf guns outside after.

This was an interesting cooking experience! I found that when we have a ton of leftovers, just mix it all in a pot with water and seasoning and make soup!
I love pickles so much more than chocolate and I love chocolate!
Whenever I make a new recipe, I feel like it turned out awful and nobody will like it, but it always turns out the opposite!

My mom does that with leftovers…But I hate soup. Like, I just can’t stand it. My mom asks how it’s possible, especially with my braces since that’s when she started liking soup, but man, I do not like soup.

Haha, well, it turned out yummy and that’s what counts! 😀 I do like to cook and bake, although this germaphobe isn’t inclined to touching raw meat… hahahaha! 😛 I’ll touch raw bacon though, just to get it to eating point, hahaha!
