Today I’m a part of Kellyn’s blog tour for the release of her newest book, At Her Fingertips. Today, I’m interviewing Kellyn…And Alice, her protagonist in the book series. I’m dying to get these books (yes, I’ve never read them!) and I’m hoping to get at least the first one for my birthday. I have read one book by Kellyn though, and she’s an amazing author.

Alice Knight is looking forward to her debut as it means she will be able to carry out her plan. She will have her first Season in London, she will meet her husband, and she will marry him. However, Alice struggles to make her feelings reconcile with her goals.
Alice is sure that, if she can only cling to her plans, she will manage without help from anyone — including God. A childhood friend returning unexpectedly, a charming gentleman who is not all he should be, and an American author with strange ideas about life all make her question the plan.
With the life she longs for at her fingertips, can Alice grasp it?

What is your favorite color?:
Pink! Which is the most cliché thing in the world for a girl to like, but whatever. Pink is awesome! I also like red and lavender. And light green. (Funny how none of my favorite colors go well together …)
Are you more energetic with people or alone?:
Definitely alone! I’m an introvert, after all. But I do love being with my friends, and sometimes I get a little crazy when I’m with them.
Why write?:
Because I can’t help it! When I first started writing, before I even shared it with anyone, it was just because it felt natural. I truly believe it’s what God wants me to do. I didn’t think of it that way at first, though – it was just for fun and eventually because I figured others might enjoy it, too. I think I liked the attention.
And then … I realized I needed to write to the glory of God, or else it was pretty much useless. So now that’s why I write; because I believe God wants me to be doing it, because I can honor Him through what I create, and because I hope to positively influence others with my novels.
What inspired Ivy and Alice?:
That’s hard to say! I can’t pinpoint anything exactly. I created Alice as a minor character in a novel I wrote when I was much younger (read: when my writing was much worse!), and I went from there. Ivy was just ‘Alice’s sister’ for many years until eventually she got a personality and life of her own. I never really intended to write a whole series about these two – I didn’t even intend to write a book about Ivy for many years – but it just happened. I suppose it was because Alice is so dynamic and Ivy is so sweet.
Do you ever incorporate people you know in your writing?:
Yes, I do. In fact, my first stories were mostly about my friends and I. Of course, I gave them different names – but they were just copies of my buddies! And I’m sure many of my characters are based off of or inspired by people I know without me even realizing it! Sometimes I think of it later. For instance, I just realized the characters in one of my current work-in-progresses, Once a Stratton, are based loosely off my sisters, and I have a similar personality to a minor character who occasionally acts as a middleman between them.
Weird, huh?
What is your favorite animal?:
Definitely horses! I just love them. I’d give anything to own one of my own! (Figuratively, of course … “anything” only goes so far!) I also love cats, border collies (they’re their own species, of course), whales, elephants, and tigers.
How do your favorites show up in your writing?:
Well, most of my characters seem to like horses. 😉 And a lot of them have cats or dogs. I have yet to include an elephant or tiger, but the first story I ever wrote was about a dolphin … which is kinda like a whale.
As far as favorite colors, you’ll notice that At Her Fingertip’s cover has pink on it!
Which character that you wrote would you say is most like you?:
Since I wrote characters in my early writing days that were specifically ME, I’d say those ones – although I think I’ve changed a lot since I was twelve.
In more recent novels, Once a Stratton definitely has at least two characters who I see definite bits of myself in – particularly Chris Strauss and Madeline Farrenson. In At Her Fingertips, none of the characters very closely resemble me. I’d say that Ivy and Alice both have characteristics of myself. Ivy is a quiet introvert who is constantly thinking even though you can’t really tell – and she likes people even though she comes off as distant and uninterested. Alice is intense, a commander, independent, and confident – sometimes overly so! All those are traits I have.
What is your favorite fiction book? How has that shaped your writing?:
My all-time favorite novel is A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton Porter. It’s obscure, I know, but it’s just so good! It’s what inspired me to start writing about human characters instead of dolphins and horses, so it definitely shaped the writer I am now majorly. I think I’ve also taken on a bit of Stratton’s writing style, her charismatic children characters, and her subtle themes. There are bad things I picked up from her, too – I write in a rather turn-of-the-century amateur novelist style half the time – but for the most part, they were good things! 😛
What is your writing slogan, if you have one?:
“Just keep writing, just keep writing, lalalala we love to wriiitteee!”
(Please tell me you sung that in your Dory voice! If you didn’t, you need to watch Finding Nemo; it’s the best!)
Writing is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. You have to work at it. But … do it cheerfully.

Do you have any nicknames?
When I was small, my father called me “Lacie.” It’s “Alice” but with the letters mixed up. I don’t particularly like it, though. Other than that, no. I like my name and don’t see any reason to use another.
What was your fondest childhood memory?
My father began teaching me to ride when I was eight, and he’s been working with me ever since then. Any time we spent together with horses was very special to me. It helped us get to know each other and establish a relationship.
What was something that has stuck with you for a long time?
When I was small, my mother told me that I should always wait for “a prince who will rescue try to you.” As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized she went through a lot because my father wouldn’t fight for her when she needed him to. I’m determined that I’ll never marry a man who isn’t willing to go through anything with me.
What is your favorite color?
I don’t have a favorite color. It’s rather silly, I think, to say that any one color is better than the other. I do like green, though. A nice neutral green …
Favorite drink (coffee, tea, milk)?
I think tea is my favorite, especially peppermint. I prefer it piping hot with a spoonful of sugar and no cream. Though I’m not too particular.
What is your shoe size?
After consulting with my author, I’ve found out what you mean! Well, all my shoes are made to fit my feet specifically – we don’t really have shoe sizes, per se, in my time – but I have average-sized feet, I imagine. There’s nothing special about them – they’re not big or small. They are rather narrow.
Do you prefer spring, summer, fall, or winter?
Oh, I don’t know! Probably summer or autumn. I enjoy spring, with all things being made new, but there’s something incomparable about a warm summer day with a slight breeze or an autumn day when you can curl up on a cozy chair next to a window with a cup of tea.
What is your biggest pet peeve?
Indecisive people. Let’s just decide what to do and do it!
What do you think is the most important thing to learn?
Oh, anything about God, I imagine. The more you know about Him, the more you appreciate His goodness and grace.
